UNBLOCKTOBER: Save Your Drains
When it comes to your toilet and drains, there should only ever be certain things that we flush and rinse. However, despite what should be basic common sense, more often than not, this is something which is often overlooked or taken for granted.
Did you know that October is also known as Unblocktober? A 31 day-long national campaign and awareness month to improve the health of our drains, sewers, watercourses and seas. In 2019, Unblocktober saw more that 5,000 people pledge to change their kitchen and bathroom habits in a bid to help save the environment.
We have spent decades consistently pouring dangerous liquids and items into our drains, without worrying about the consequences.
When sewers and drains get blocked, it can result in foul waste flooding, pollution and excavation and repair. However, everyone in their own homes can make a difference; meaning we all share the responsibility of protecting the environment and the planet from pollution and fatbergs.
Toilets: What Not to Flush
To put it bluntly, there should only ever be three things which we put down the toilet; pee, poo and toilet paper (the three P’s). However, people are still flushing plenty of other things which they shouldn’t; leading to serious blockages.
Here’s a list of what we shouldn’t be flushing:
- Unused drugs or pharmaceuticals
- Tampons or sanitary products
- Fats, oils, greases
- Disposable nappies
- Paper towels
- Flammable or explosive liquids
- Baby wipes
- Flushable wipes
- Automotive chemicals
- Animal / cat litter
- Other chunks of general waste
When it comes to drains, it can be tempting to rinse everything down, especially after cooking a meal. However, what we pour down our drains can cause blockages, which then lead to more serious issues in the long run, for our household pipes and septic systems.
Here’s a list of things you should keep out of your drains:
- Fats, oils, greases
- Egg shells
- Cleaning products
- Medications & drugs
- Food waste
- Pasta & rice
