Since the Victorians began the introduction of piped water to the major cities the water companies have been developing a huge, and largely unseen network. There is now over a thousand reservoirs feeding a 700,000 km network of pipes via water treatment plants. Buried below ground is the equivalent mileage in pipes of 200 times the length of the motorway network in the UK. Constant use, ground subsidence and accidental damage creates a never ending demand for repairs and remediation.
